Funks Grove and Normal, IL
Along the highway a sign popped up to Funks Grove of Maple Sirup fame (yes they market it with an "i" in the spelling! What turned up was a long dirt road that got narrower the further I went in. I came across this old church and graveyard, but the ghost town may have been further in. It was kind of spooky, and it was getting late, so I headed back to the highway.
It was becoming difficult to follow the road markers in some areas. Just outside Bloomington, I stopped to ask directions at this gas station. Of course it was just another photo op, and I recognized it from some tour books so I must be close. As I turned around, I saw a fellow bbq'ing in his back yard so I called to him "I've lost the trail!" Well, I guess I wasn't the first flat lander that asked, because he told me the trail disappeared under Interstate 55 and I would have to get on it for 4 miles to the next exit, then I would pick it up again.

I'm glad you slowed it down and that you're taking in a lot of the history (real and semi real) of Route 66. Good on you to soak up this once in a lifetime experience.
