Day 5 - Grand Island, NE to Davenport, IA via Hampton, NE
I took Hwy 34 out of Grand Island, all the way to Lincoln. It was a good 2 lane road and more scenic than I-80. It also took me through Hampton, the little village where our Dad immigrated to from Denmark in 1920. I drove around, stopping at the post office, the farm store and a welding shop to chat with the friendly locals. They put me in touch with various people they thought might have info. The distinctive landmark for the farm where he lived was a red brick barn. No one recalled it in the area. They did recognize the family name associated with Dad's sponsor, and I was directed to the owner of the welding shop, but he was absent, helping his 90 year old father move to a nursing home. They were both lifetime residents, so they may have had insights, but no chance to hook up today. It was the only place I have felt comfortable (so far) leaving the truck unlocked.
All roads out of Hampton into the countryside were dirt. Very common in Nebraska and Iowa. And well graded too! Here is a pic of Angry Bird going through downtown Hampton (pop. 500) and at the end of the street on the edge of town facing north.

Sorry you couldn't find out more about your father's time in Hampton and see his farm. At least you got a flavor for the area. Sights, sounds, smells, people. A good stop.
