Day 21 - Williams, California to Wilsonville, Oregon

 Over 500 miles today in about 10 1/2 hours of drive time.  I was tempted to get past Portland tonight in order to miss the morning rush hour, which is brutal.  Oh well, I guess I will just have to sleep in and wait for traffic to clear!

A few things made today more interesting.  Somewhere around Medford, OR a patrol car came onto the freeway in no special hurry, but then turned on their lights and started weaving down all three northbound lanes.  They did this for maybe half a mile while slowing down the whole way.  It was effectively herding the traffic into to a group of slow moving vehicles.  When the patrol man/woman had us all down to a walking pace, she parked her patrol car across the three lanes, jumped out and grabbed a truck tire from the middle of the freeway.  She drug it to the side, ran back to her car and took off!  Never been part of a car herding event before.

Next up was meeting Ken Tidwell in Salem.  He is a member of the Thunderbird Super Coupe forum that I joined over 10 years ago when I started to build Angry Bird.  He was a key contributor to the success of everything that is super coupe in my truck!  Leading up to my trip, he assisted in figuring out the air conditioning system, and sent me notes that helped me understand the recent fuel pump failure.  We finally met up in person!  Pictured is his pretty black bird.  It is dubbed "Annie" as it is an Anniversary edition of this T-bird model.

  1. Kudos on stopping to meet Ted. As much as both of us crave variety in the kinds of cars/trucks we build, there is always someone who is THE expert on a particular make and model and doesn't want to cloud his brain with info about anything else. We couldn't do what we do without these guys. They gladly pass on their "deep dive" knowledge to us. They have as much fun with the old car hobby as we do but in a very different way. Thanks, Ted, and all the others in this category.

    1. You mean Ken. He is currently into restoring an Audi Quattro that he got at auction on coparts.com. He had an F-100 at one time too. I think he is a sponge for information and luckily is willing to share it! He does know the Super Coupe though! I mentioned my temperature gauge hardly eve got above 1/4 upon warm-up. He said it was usually the connector on top of the sensor, jiggled it a bit and suggested I take it off when the engine cooled to pinch it tighter. When I got back on the road, I noticed my temperature gauge was almost in the middle "normal" range!
